Our History

Through the first 14 years of its existence LWI successfully managed a collaboration-based research and development program that benefited the Army, as well as other DOD and defense community stakeholders. Through consecutive innovative CAs with ARL, LWI has addressed Army (and other Service) research needs.  LWI has a proven ability to research topics of interest to the Army or other Services by rapidly locating and engaging qualified researchers who have expertise in the subject area provided to LWI by the military, and then providing funds to the project from the Army, or through MIPRs from other military organizations.  LWI has also performed research using its own team, and has also executed subaward agreements with other organizations, including universities and small businesses.

In its initial CA LWI received more than $68 million in funding from ARL and other government sources, and successfully managed 165 separate applied research and development projects, focusing on:

  • Protection
  • Base Defense
  • Army Counter IED
  • Homeland Defense/Civil Support
  • Human Systems Integration and Human Factors Engineering
  • Other disciplines for which MSCoE is the Joint and/or Army Proponent

LWI’s subsequent CA with the Army Research Laboratory allowed the organization to manage several dozen applied research projects with scopes of work focused on:

  • Soldier performance
  • Simulation and training
  • Human systems integration
  • General research topics of importance to Fort Leonard Wood, including, Protection; Security; Mobility; Soldier Resiliency; and Logistics / Basing and Traumatic Brain Injury focusing primarily on human interaction in each of these areas
